MEET THE TEAM: Mark
Some people step into a career path purposefully. Others find their calling along the way. With Mark, it is clearly a story of passion, discovery and entrepreneurship. After studying as a commercial engineer in Brussels, he gathered a wide range of work experience in IT, textiles and human resources. But it was only when he “accidentally” ended up in the travel sector that he really found his niche. What started as a coincidence grew into a mission. The travel bug never left him. That passion, combined with his entrepreneurial spirit, led to the founding of Act-Wise – where he still holds the compass as a co-businessman today.
Anyone who talks to Mark quickly notices: travelling is much more than relaxation for him. It is a way to learn, connect and enrich – values that are also at the heart of Act-Wise.
For short trips, Spain remains his absolute favourite: ‘That’s where everything comes together – the climate, the atmosphere, the culture ánd the food.’ From simple tapas to sophisticated gastronomy, Spain feels like coming home. For the big adventure, Mark chooses Namibia. ‘The overwhelming nature, the tranquillity, the quality of the lodges… it’s impressive every time.’ Comfort, safety and wonder go hand in hand there – just the way he likes it.
Besides, according to Mark, you don’t always have to travel far to unwind. His favourite place in Belgium? The Flemish Ardennes. ‘A piece of pristine greenery with character, where you can still really slow down.’ That mix of nature, authenticity and simplicity appeals to him greatly.
When asked ‘camping or all-inclusive resort?’, Mark has a clear answer: ‘Neither.’ Just give him a stylish boutique hotel or a cosy B&B. They are those small, personal places where he really feels at home – just as he wants to create with Act-Wise: authentic, warm and with an eye for detail.
And quality is also important in the office. The classics may be tempting, but these days a bag of nuts is within reach. Although a classic serving of ballekes in tomato sauce on a weekday remains his ultimate comfort food.
If Mark could choose one superpower, it would be one that truly makes the world a better place: giving all children equal opportunities. It says a lot about his motives: justice, empathy and forward-looking thinking.
At home, life is never dull. With three children, their partners, two grandchildren (and perhaps a few more on the way) and a loving, energetic wife, there is always life in the kitchen. There is no time for pets at the moment, but there is no shortage of love and life.
And, oh yes: for those who really want to know, Mark is shoe size 44. Spacious enough to carry his vision and enthusiasm effortlessly.
